FAQ

Do all home extensions require planning permission?

Not all extensions require planning, some can be built under permitted development which means that just building regulations are required. If you have a semi detached house you can build up to 6metres from the original rear wall of the house or up to 8metres if the property is detached. There are some restrictions if your home has already been extended, however our property experts at Refresh Interiors will be able to advise you further.

How long does planning permission take?

This does depend on the size and complexity of the project, but planning can be achieved within 8 weeks for more simple builds, and up to 13 weeks if the build is bigger. We have an inhouse architect that can work with you to achieve your goals and will guide you through and manage the planning process.

Can my loft be converted? 

Most loft spaces make an excellent way to create additional bedrooms or space within your home, however not every loft can be converted. An easy way to get an idea as to if your loft is suitable is to look whether any similar houses on your street have had a loft conversion, if they have then its most likely that yours can be too. The main requirement for a loft conversion is a minimum head height requirement is 2.2m. If your loft space has this height from floor to highest point then it most likely can be converted. 

Should I tell my insurance company about the building work that I am having done?

Yes, you should tell your insurer about any changes and alterations that change your homes structure, security, and value. Works such as adding additional bedrooms through either an extension or a loft conversion may increase the value of your home therefore may affect your buildings and contents insurance. 
If you are undergoing extensive works and need to move out of your home for several weeks, its best to advise your insurance company that the property is not being habited.
